The Trump movement's most revealing and distinctive instances – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of a few weeks, the American president commenced revealing the public his designs for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing to construct it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to USAID is 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – really, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of multiple the richest Americans, the majority of whom have business with the government.
We went from 'the meek shall inherit the world' to 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the chief executive seek to颠覆 the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of animosity who endorses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, however it is still disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his crime policy indicates that whenever an individual takes your outer garment you must offer them your pullover as well.
The obvious and straightforward truth that the Jesus from scripture requests a kind of radical love centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Finest Among Us
So I have been encouraged to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired citizens to turn out in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or reject?
America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the finest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it unique and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus. In all circumstances does it suggest pretending the most negative regarding America and religious tradition was nonexistent; it means both modesty and faith, a mixture that committed American Christians should be comfortable with.
